Layla Turman, Associate

Layla was born and raised in Gillette, Wyoming but has since made Montana her home. Prior to practicing law, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Political Science from the University of Montana. She received her law degree from the University of Montana School of Law.

Layla enjoys working on a wide variety of legal issues and has experience in criminal prosecution and defense, family law, consumer protection, and providing limited scope legal services.

In 2015, she worked for Western Justice Associates in Bozeman, where she focused primarily on consumer protection law. She worked for the Bozeman City Attorney’s office in 2016, where she prosecuted misdemeanor offenses and researched and briefed civil legal issues affecting the Bozeman Community.

Layla is active in her community, and enjoys broadening her legal knowledge and skills through community service. Throughout law school, she worked at the self-help law center, where she assisted pro-se family law clients navigate divorce and parenting issues.  She also served as a court appointed special advocate for children facing abuse and neglect as a volunteer for CASA of Missoula. Layla represented her class on the Student Bar Association and served as the Contracts Law teaching assistant to first year students.

Layla spent the spring of 2017 as the ASMSU Legal Services clinical attorney, where she provided legal services to MSU students in the areas of criminal defense, family law, business formation, and landlord tenant disputes. In this position, she helped dozens of students resolve criminal charges including DUIs, MIPs, and traffic violations. She also assisted students accused of sexual assault and sexual harassment navigate the University’s Title IX administrative investigation and disciplinary processes.

In her down time, Layla enjoys floating and fishing Montana’s wild and beautiful rivers and spending time with her family and friends.
