Do I need a Lawyer to Help in My Divorce?

Lawyers are not required in the process of divorce, but they can help to protect your interests and avoid a trial. One lawyer cannot represent both spouses, though if your spouse retains a lawyer it is highly recommended that you hire one as well. Your decision will also depend on whether you can work with your spouse without one; the more contentious your ex (or if there is a problem with abuse, whether spousal, child, sexual, or substance abuse), the more likely you will need a lawyer to protect you and any children you may have.
