A “qualifying child” is:
Under the age of 17 at the end of the tax year
Your son, daughter, adopted child, stepchild, foster child, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, grandchild, niece, or nephew
A US citizen, national, or resident alien
Claimed as a dependent on your tax return
Furthermore, they must have lived with you for more than half the year and have not provided for more than half of their own support.
